Plan Around Old Faithful — Not the Other Way Around
Old Faithful erupts approximately every 60–110 minutes. After each eruption, rangers post the next predicted time (within a 10-minute window) on the board outside the Visitor Education Center and at the Inn. Check the NPS Yellowstone app or call the park before you leave so you can time your arrival. Get to the seating area at least 30 minutes early — the benches fill up fast. Don't miss it chasing the overlook trail.
Day 1 Logistics

Drive: ~40 miles inside the park, all paved · Fuel: Available at Old Faithful and Canyon (pricey — top off in West Yellowstone)
Food: Old Faithful Lodge cafeteria and Geyser Grill are solid quick-service options. Old Faithful Inn dining room for a sit-down lunch (reservations helpful in peak season).

Charlie's Yellowstone Rules — Tighter Than Grand Teton
Yellowstone is strict: no dogs on any boardwalks, trails, or thermal areas — period. Charlie can be in parking lots, campgrounds, and within 100 feet of a paved road. He must stay on a 6-foot leash at all times. At every thermal stop today (Grand Prismatic boardwalk, Old Faithful boardwalk, Upper Geyser Basin) one of you stays with Charlie in the car with AC running. Take turns so everyone gets to see everything. Hot pavement can burn paws — check the ground before letting him walk on parking lot surfaces mid-afternoon.
Today's Route
8:00am
Depart
Depart
Leave Grizzly RV Park
Check the NPS Yellowstone app or call the Old Faithful prediction line before you go. Set your target arrival time at Old Faithful and work backward from there — everything else fills in around that anchor.
8:20am
West Entrance Gate
Your America the Beautiful pass gets you in free. Keep it accessible — rangers scan it at the gate. Pick up a park map if you don't have one; the thermal area maps are worth having in hand.
8:45am
Madison Junction
The Madison River valley along this stretch is prime elk and bison territory — don't rush through it. The river runs along the road and there are good pull-offs. Turn left (south) toward Old Faithful at the junction.
9:00am
Firehole Lake Drive (if open)
A 3-mile one-way paved loop off the main road. Worth it if open — Great Fountain Geyser is one of the most predictable and visually dramatic geysers in the park. Check eruption predictions at the sign at the entrance. White Dome Geyser is also on this loop. Skip and come back if timing doesn't work with Old Faithful schedule.
9:45am
Grand Prismatic Spring — Boardwalk
The largest hot spring in the United States and one of the most otherworldly places you'll ever stand near. The boardwalk circles the spring at ground level — the colors shift from deep blue center to orange, yellow, and green at the edges where heat-loving bacteria form brilliant mats. Smell of sulfur is strong. Allow 30–45 minutes.
10:30am
Grand Prismatic Overlook Trail
A short but worthwhile 2-mile round trip on the Fairy Falls trailhead. The overlook gives you the aerial view of Grand Prismatic you've seen in every photo — vivid rings of color against the steam rising off the water. Plan 30–45 minutes. The boardwalk view and the overlook view are completely different experiences — do both if you can.
11:30am
Biscuit Basin
A smaller, quieter geyser basin just north of Old Faithful — usually much less crowded. Sapphire Pool and Jewel Geyser are the standouts. The boardwalk loop is about 0.6 miles. Good for a quick 20-minute stop before heading to Old Faithful.
12:00pm
Old Faithful — The Main Event
Head straight to the seating area around the geyser when you arrive and claim a spot on the benches or a good standing position. The geyser shoots 8,400 gallons of boiling water up to 185 feet in the air for 1.5–5 minutes. It's impossible to be underwhelmed. After eruption, the next predicted time is posted — plan your afternoon around it if you want to watch twice.
1:00pm
Old Faithful Visitor Education Center
Excellent exhibits on how geysers work, the supervolcano beneath the park, and Yellowstone's thermal ecosystem. Worth 30–45 minutes. The eruption prediction board is posted here and updated in real time.
1:45pm
Old Faithful Inn
One of the great historic buildings in the national park system — an enormous log structure built in 1903–1904 entirely by hand in the dead of winter. Step inside and look up at the 76-foot lobby ceiling. The crow's nest balconies and the massive rhyolite fireplace are extraordinary. Have lunch here or just grab a drink on the porch and watch the geyser.
2:30pm
Upper Geyser Basin Walk
The paved path from Old Faithful winds past the highest concentration of geysers anywhere on earth — Castle Geyser, Grand Geyser (most predictable large geyser), Riverside Geyser (erupts over the Firehole River), and the iconic vivid blue Morning Glory Pool. Full loop is about 3 miles; go as far as time allows and turn back whenever.
3:30pm
Head Back to West Entrance
Return via the same route — Madison Junction and out the West Entrance. Keep an eye on the Madison River meadows for bison and elk on the way home; late afternoon is active time for wildlife in this corridor.
4:30pm
Back at Grizzly RV Park
Day 1 done. Old Faithful checked. Passport stamped. Tomorrow — Mammoth Hot Springs.
