Check Before You Go — Canyon–Tower Road May Be Closed
The road between Canyon Village and Tower-Roosevelt Junction (Dunraven Pass) can close in June due to snow — this happened to us. Call the park road hotline first: (307) 344-2177.
If it's closed, your alternate route is Canyon → Norris → Mammoth → Tower-Roosevelt. This adds roughly 35 miles and about 45 minutes versus the direct Dunraven Pass road. Budget accordingly and start even earlier if Tower is on the same day's agenda.

Day 2 Logistics — The Early Start is Everything
Start: Grizzly RV Park, West Yellowstone · Depart: 5:00am · Return: ~4:00pm
Route: West Entrance → Madison → Canyon (South Rim, North Rim, VC) → Norris → Willow Park → Mammoth → North Entrance → Roosevelt Arch → back via Norris → Madison VC → West Entrance

Charlie Notes for This Day
Canyon South and North Rim overlooks are paved, roadside, and Charlie-friendly on leash — great views without leaving him behind. The Brink of the Lower Falls trail is short but no dogs allowed — one person goes while the other stays with Charlie at the top overlook. At Mammoth, the village roads and paved paths are accessible. Keep Charlie calm near the elk — June calves mean cows are protective. He stays in the car at both visitor centers.
Today's Route
💙 Part 1 — Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone
5:00am
Depart
Depart
Leave Grizzly RV Park — Early Start
5am is the secret. The canyon in early morning light is golden, misty, and completely empty of other visitors. The drive to Canyon via Madison Junction is about 1h 20m — you'll arrive right as the first real light is hitting the walls.
6:15am
South Canyon — Upper Falls & Artist Point
Start on the South Rim. The Upper Falls overlook is just off the road — the river drops 109 feet here, and the early morning mist catches the light perfectly. Continue to Artist Point for the defining canyon view: the Yellowstone River 800 feet below, the Lower Falls in the middle distance, canyon walls glowing yellow and red. At this hour you'll likely have it to yourselves.
7:00am
Brink of the Lower Falls
Short, steep trail to the very edge of the 308-foot Lower Falls — you're standing at the precise point where the Yellowstone River launches itself into the canyon. The sound, the mist, and the view straight down are like nothing else in the park. Completely different from any overlook. Your legs will know you did something.
7:30am
North Canyon — Lower Falls Overlook & Short Hikes
Cross to the North Rim for the face-on view of the Lower Falls from Lookout Point — a completely different perspective than Artist Point. The North Rim trail has several short hike options along the canyon edge. Morning light on the north-facing walls is excellent.
7:45am
One-Way North Canyon Road
Take the one-way North Canyon Road — winds along the canyon rim with additional viewpoints and delivers you right into Canyon Village. A scenic finish to the canyon morning.
8:00am
Canyon Visitor Education Center — Stamp #1
Timed perfectly — they open at 8am and you're right there. One of the best VCs in the park: the supervolcano floor map of the Yellowstone caldera is genuinely mind-bending. Grab the stamp and head north toward Mammoth.
🏔️ Part 2 — Mammoth Hot Springs
8:15am
Drive North — Norris to Willow Park
Head north through Norris toward Mammoth. About 5 miles north of Norris, the road enters Willow Park — the best moose-spotting location in Yellowstone. Broad willow marshes at roadside. Drive slowly, scan carefully, and be patient. Moose blend in better than you'd think.
10:00am
Mammoth Hot Springs — Lower Terraces
The travertine terraces look like something from another planet — white limestone steps pouring down the hillside, streaked with color from heat-loving bacteria. Liberty Cap, Palette Spring, Opal Spring. Constantly changing as thermal flow shifts. Allow 30–40 minutes on the boardwalk.
10:45am
Upper Terrace Drive & Mammoth Village Elk
Drive the one-way upper terrace loop for elevated views of the entire formation. Then cruise through Mammoth Village — the resident elk herd treats the parking lots and hotel lawns as their own territory. In June there may be calves nearby. Keep Charlie calm and give the elk plenty of space.
11:15am
Albright Visitor Center — Stamp #2
The main Mammoth VC, housed in the original Fort Yellowstone Army buildings. Excellent exhibits on the park's history and the soldiers who protected it before the NPS existed. Get stamp #2 of the day.
11:45am
Lunch at the Mammoth Deli
The Mammoth deli gets the job done. It's not going to be a highlight of the trip — but you've been moving since 5am and you need fuel. Eat, rest, and appreciate that you've already covered the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Mammoth Hot Springs before noon.
🏛️ Part 3 — The Exit & The Arch
12:30pm
Exit North Entrance — Roosevelt Arch Photo
Leave the park through the North Entrance into Gardiner, MT and stop immediately for a photo with the Roosevelt Arch — the original 1903 stone entrance arch. Teddy Roosevelt himself laid the cornerstone, and the inscription reads: "For the benefit and enjoyment of the people." One of the most iconic landmarks in any national park. Takes two minutes. Do not skip it.
1:00pm
Drive Back — Mammoth → Norris → Madison
Re-enter the park and head south through Norris and down the Madison Valley toward the West Entrance. The afternoon drive through Madison Valley is open and scenic — bison often graze along the river in the flats.
2:30pm
Madison Visitor Center — Stamp #3
Quick stop at the Madison VC for the third passport stamp of the day. Well earned.
4:00pm
Back at Grizzly RV Park
Canyon at dawn, Mammoth Hot Springs, Roosevelt Arch, three passport stamps — and home by 4. The 5am start is the whole reason this worked. If there's one day in Yellowstone where you drag yourself out of bed early, it's this one.
✅ What Made This Day Work
⏰
5am start — the canyon in early morning light is completely different. Empty, golden, misty. Worth every minute of lost sleep.
💙
South Canyon first — Artist Point at sunrise, then Brink of Lower Falls while you still have energy.
🏛️
Roosevelt Arch — don't skip it. Two minutes for one of the great American park landmarks.
📮
Three stamps — Canyon VC, Albright, and Madison. Timing the Canyon VC arrival at exactly 8am was the key.
⚠️ Road Closure Plan B
📞
Call (307) 344-2177 before this day to check Canyon–Tower-Roosevelt road status. Dunraven Pass can be closed by snow in June.
🗺️
If closed: go Canyon → Norris → Mammoth → Tower-Roosevelt instead of the direct Dunraven Pass road. Adds roughly 35 miles and 45 minutes.
⏰
If using the alternate route to reach Tower the same day: start at 4:30am instead of 5am to absorb the extra time.
